Care Instructions
Preserving Your Heirloom for Generations
Your custom graphic novel is a museum-quality heirloom designed to last for generations. With proper care and handling, your book will remain beautiful and intact for decades to come. Follow these guidelines to preserve your precious memories.
General Handling
Clean Hands
Always handle your graphic novel with clean, dry hands. Natural oils from skin can transfer to pages and covers, potentially causing discoloration over time. Consider washing and drying hands thoroughly before each reading.
Opening the Book
Open your graphic novel gently, supporting both covers. Never force pages to lay completely flat, as this can damage the spine binding. Allow the book to naturally open at a comfortable angle (approximately 120-140 degrees).
Turning Pages
Turn pages gently by lifting from the top or bottom corner. Avoid licking fingers to turn pages, as moisture can damage the paper. Never fold page corners (dog-ear) to mark your place—use a bookmark instead.
Reading Surface
Place your book on a clean, dry, flat surface while reading. Avoid reading over food or drinks to prevent accidental spills or stains.
Storage Guidelines
Proper Positioning
Store your graphic novel upright on a bookshelf, similar to other books. If storing flat, ensure nothing heavy is placed on top that could cause warping or pressure marks.
Climate Control
Keep your book in a climate-controlled environment:
- Temperature: 60-70°F (15-21°C) is ideal
- Humidity: 30-50% relative humidity
- Avoid: Attics, basements, garages, or other areas with temperature/humidity fluctuations
Light Exposure
Protect your book from direct sunlight and bright artificial light, which can fade covers and pages over time. Store in a location away from windows or use UV-filtering glass if displaying behind glass.
Protective Slipcase (Heirloom Collection)
If your graphic novel came with a protective slipcase or presentation box, use it for long-term storage. This provides an additional layer of protection from dust, light, and physical damage.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Dust Removal
Gently dust your graphic novel periodically using a soft, dry microfiber cloth or a soft-bristled brush. Always dust with the book closed, brushing away from the spine toward the outer edge.
What NOT to Use
Never use the following on your graphic novel:
- Water or liquid cleaners
- Chemical solvents or sprays
- Abrasive cloths or rough materials
- Adhesive tape (even for repairs)
- Erasers or correction fluids
Professional Cleaning
For stubborn stains or damage, contact a professional book conservator. Do not attempt DIY repairs on valuable heirloom books, as improper techniques can cause permanent damage.
Material-Specific Care
Leather Covers (Heirloom Collection)
Hand-marbled genuine leather covers require special care:
- Keep away from excessive moisture and humidity
- Avoid exposure to heat sources (radiators, direct sunlight, etc.)
- If desired, apply a small amount of specialized leather conditioner (pH-neutral, designed for bookbinding leather) once every 2-3 years
- Always test leather products on a small, inconspicuous area first
Fabric Covers (Linen, Coated Cloth)
Fabric-covered books should be:
- Kept dry at all times
- Dusted regularly with a soft brush
- Protected from oils and lotions that can stain fabric
- Never washed or spot-cleaned with liquid
Vegan Leather (Premium Collection)
Vegan leather covers are durable and low-maintenance:
- Wipe gently with a slightly damp (not wet) microfiber cloth if needed
- Dry immediately with a soft, dry cloth
- Avoid harsh chemicals or solvents
- Protect from sharp objects that could scratch the surface
Common Issues & Solutions
Minor Cover Scratches
Light scratches on vegan leather or coated cloth may fade naturally over time. For deeper scratches, contact us for repair recommendations. Never attempt to buff or polish covers yourself.
Page Curling
If pages begin to curl, this often indicates exposure to humidity or temperature changes. Move the book to a more stable environment and place it flat with a light weight (another book) on top for 24-48 hours.
Loose Binding
If you notice the binding becoming loose, stop handling the book immediately and contact us. We can provide repair services or recommend a qualified book conservator.
Accidental Damage
If your graphic novel is damaged (torn pages, water exposure, etc.), contact us within 30 days. Depending on the type and extent of damage, we may be able to help with repairs or replacement under our quality guarantee.
Long-Term Preservation
Archival Storage
For long-term preservation (decades or generations):
- Store in the protective slipcase or presentation box provided
- Consider additional archival-quality storage boxes (acid-free materials)
- Keep in a dark, climate-controlled location
- Inspect annually for signs of damage or deterioration
Digital Backup
Heirloom Collection customers receive a USB drive with all digital files. Store this separately from the physical book to preserve your story in multiple formats.
Passing Down to Future Generations
When gifting your graphic novel to children or grandchildren, include a copy of these care instructions and explain the book's significance and value. Teaching proper handling ensures your heirloom continues to be cherished.
